False or misleading information about the US elections spread by Elon Musk on his online social network (Center for Combating Digital Hate, CCDH).

The billionaire also came under fire for having posted a manipulated video of US Vice President and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris at the end of July, which had millions of views and which he then described as “satire”.

These messages do not display the usual “notes” below the posts, created by users to contextualize questionable or erroneous messages, a tool promoted by X to combat misinformation.

According to attorney Nora Benavidez, Elon Musk “is behaving as if he is above reproach despite a growing body of evidence about the damaging role he plays in fueling disinformation and division ahead of the election.” “As his behavior is on the verge of interfering in the election, it is up to others – the public, regulators and advertisers – to hold him accountable for his anti-democratic behavior,” the Free Press official told AFP.

X, which did not respond to AFP’s requests, has greatly reduced its content moderation teams, previously responsible for combating disinformation, and relaxed its regulation, becoming, according to experts, a haven for false information. Its chatbot Grok is also accused of spreading false information about the election.
