In Spain, a man damaged a 6,000-year-old painting for a photo on Facebook

Since last May, Spanish police have been investigating the deterioration of a cave painting after a 39-year-old man poured water on it to take a beautiful photograph.

Historical heritage damaged for a photo. In Spain, a 39-year-old man is under investigation after defacing a 6,000-year-old cave painting to take a photo and post it on Facebook, reports Spanish newspaper El País.

The Civil Guard’s nature protection service, which is investigating the deterioration of a cave painting, began its investigation last May after seeing photographs of damp cave paintings, with their location on Facebook. According to the Civil Guard, these photographs show that water was poured over the paintings in question to obtain a clearer image.

Destroyed heritage

The damaged paintings are located in various sites in the Sierra Sur de Jaén, in the province of Jaén. This province is one of the regions most affected by the destruction of heritage. Three years ago, other paintings in the province were damaged after two people painted graffiti on them.

In 1998, UNESCO included 69 prehistoric rock art sites in the mountains of Jaén, Granada and Almería on the World Heritage List. They are considered the first artistic expressions of humanity. Responsible for the conservation of these sites, the Junta de Andalucía has announced aid to try to recover these paintings. However, local councils complain about the lack of a comprehensive protection plan to put an end to the acts of vandalism.
