Victim of a cyber attack, Thales opens an investigation after an alleged data theft

Thales was the victim of a cyberattack claimed by the LockBit 3.0 group. Although no ransom has been identified so far, an internal investigation has been opened.

Technology group Thales has opened an investigation following allegations of data theft by the LockBit 3.0 group, which recently disrupted the Corbeil-Essonnes hospital, a spokesperson said on Tuesday (Nov 1).

“We have become aware of an allegation of data theft by LockBit 3.0 against data believed to belong to the Thales group,” the spokesperson told AFP, adding that “LockBit 3.0 ransomware and extortion group announced that wanted to publish the data on November 7, 2022 at 06:29 UTC.”

“Data security is our priority”

“However, we carefully monitor every allegation related to data theft. A dedicated team of security experts systematically investigates these types of situations, with data security being our top priority,” he added.

The Russian-speaking group LockBit 3.0 claimed responsibility for a cyberattack against Thales in a communication on the darknet (a part of the Internet not referenced by classic browsers), according to franceinfo.

Very sensitive and confidential documents

Hackers threaten to release ‘all available data’ on November 7, ‘highly sensitive, confidential and high-risk’ documents, citing company operations, business documents, accounting records, customer files, software…

“As far as customers are concerned, you can turn to the appropriate bodies to consider taking legal action against this company that has largely neglected confidentiality rules. We are at your disposal to offer you the best of our knowledge”, they write in their publication reproduced by the specialized site Zataz.

The LockBit 3.0 group disrupted the operation of the South Francilien Hospital Center (CHSF) in Corbeil-Essonnes by launching a spectacular cyberattack in August. He demanded a $10 million ransom and then posted patient, staff and partner data on his website.
