How a YouTuber managed to play Doom on a pharmacy cross

In his latest video, YouTuber Sylvqin hijacked the display codes of a pharmacy luminescent panel to run video games on it.

Will we soon see pharmacists playing Tetris from the front of their store? YouTuber Sylvqin, who specializes in web culture content, may inspire you with the idea.

In his latest video, the cameraman investigated the animations broadcast on the famous luminescent crosses that we see hanging in pharmacies. This time he got a panel. After restoring it to working order, Sylvqin asked his community to code various animated and even interactive displays.

The scrutinized cross

To achieve this feat, the cameraman had fun dissecting the object. The panel is a relatively old model that has 2,560 green LEDs, or 1,280 on each of the two sides. The screen is programmed using software that communicates via radio transmitter with the panel. The YouTuber, with the help of a specialist, analyzed the signals received on the motherboard. The latter provides information to each LED on whether it should light up or not.

The duo then replaced the radio receiver with a Raspberry Pi, a small computer that fits on an electronic board. Once connected to the panel’s motherboard, the device can send the same type of signals as by radio. Result: The computer controls all LEDs on the panel to display various programs.

An unusual playing field for developers

And the Sylvqin community has not lacked creativity. The duo launched a call on the GitHub platform “that allows developers to do anything on a small cross.” Thanks to them, the duo was able to pay for part of Tetrisof flappy bird o Pong for four players in a pharmacy panel. Other collaborators managed to create animations on these approximately 1,280 monochromatic LEDs.

The developers have even managed to run Condemn on the board. Released in 1993, the first-person shooter is one of the pioneers of video games. For several years now, developers have had fun running the game on all types of electronic equipment, as evidenced by the subreddit dedicated to it. This achievement joins a long list of the strangest devices Doom has ever been seen running on, including a lawnmower.
