Has Elon Musk become more than just an entrepreneur? The head of Tesla and SpaceX regularly meets with heads of state, but it is his relationship with Vladimir Putin that raises questions.
According to the Wall Street Journal, which cites an “intelligence source,” Elon Musk and the Russian president have had several exchanges since 2022, until this year.
The billionaire has also been in contact with Kremlin officials. According to the business daily, Moscow specifically asked the head of SpaceX not to activate its Starlink satellite system over Taiwan, as a favor offered to China. So far, Starlink is not active in this country, which has not given authorization for its deployment.
In statements to the newspaper, Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov limited himself to mentioning a phone call between the two to discuss “space and current and future technologies.” Same story for Musk, who acknowledged an argument with the Russian president in April 2021.
“Peace plan”
Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, regularly meets with heads of state, including controversial figures such as Argentine President Javier Milei or Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
But since the invasion of Ukraine, relations between Russia and the United States have deteriorated significantly. Last February, Joe Biden even called his Russian counterpart a “crazy bastard.”
By supporting Trump, Elon Musk is much less hostile. In October 2022, he even attempted to propose his “peace plan” between Russia and Ukraine, which involved Crimea remaining Russian. His statements sparked outrage among Ukrainian authorities.
The truth is that the head of X, who could play an important role in a possible Donald Trump government, has important access to sensitive information, thanks to contracts signed with the American government.
“I have a top secret clearance, but I have to say, like most things I know… the reason they keep it top secret is because it’s so boring,” he reflected during a speech last week in Pennsylvania .
