Orion. Behind this name hides the future artificial intelligence of OpenAI. Despite recent departures within the company, it plans to present this new AI model in December, according to the American media The Verge, around the second anniversary of ChatGPT.
Within the startup, Orion is considered the successor to GPT-4, a model presented in March 2023 and which notably allows ChatGPT to understand images in addition to texts. In early September, an OpenAI developer on X (formerly Twitter) described this future model as potentially up to 100 times more powerful than GPT-4.
Limited access at start
The company reportedly used the o1 AI model to train Orion with data, as The Information reported in late August. Known at the time by the codename Strawberry, o1 was officially launched in September to equip ChatGPT with “reasoning” capabilities, allowing the chatbot to answer more complex questions.
When it launches, Orion will not be released widely, according to The Verge. OpenAI reportedly plans to reserve it first for companies it works closely with so they can create their own products and features using this AI model. It remains to be seen if the company will rename it at launch to show that it is the successor to GPT-4, calling it GPT-5.
Faced with these revelations, the CEO of OpenAI reacted in X, denying the media’s information, calling it “fake news.”
