Motor skills, memory and social connection: this console was designed to improve the quality of life of older people

Designed by an engineer from Lille, Koppelia is a video game console intended to stimulate memory, motor skills and social interactions in older people.

In a nursing home in Lille, seniors had the opportunity to try out a specific game console. Called Koppelia, it is specifically aimed at this audience, with the aim of improving their quality of life. “Adapted to their needs, it stimulates motor skills, memory and promotes social ties,” we can read on the website of this project.

Specifically, this console, which looks like a bottle, will be used in a group, under the supervision of a facilitator, as part of a trivia game, for example. To answer questions, seniors simply press a large button, which is located above the controller.

“Create a link”

Currently, the console only allows you to play trivia or singing games, but later it could be used to play a Mario Kart suitable for seniors, according to Mohamed Al Olawi. “We will try to accommodate all disabilities,” he also declared.

Having attracted residents of the Lille EHPAD where Koppelia was tested, the console was also well received by its facilitators. “There’s really the spirit of ‘making a connection’, which is what we’re looking for as senior care home facilitators, so it’s a great way to do that,” said delighted Marie-Sophie Taillat, host and care home coordinator.
