Elon Musk not only plays with chance, he also plays with fire. The man with the largest fortune in the world is spending lavishly to support candidate Donald Trump. Every day, a signer of a petition defending conservative values will receive one million dollars, until Election Day on November 5. This goes against a political commitment that questions and raises the attention of the American justice system.
Prosecutions dismissed
On October 28, Larry Krasner, district attorney of Philadelphia (the most populous city in Pennsylvania), initiated proceedings against America PAC, an organization supporting the Trump campaign created by Musk. Participation in a lottery conditioned on political participation and involving the provision of personal information violates local Pennsylvania laws. According to Reuters, Elon Musk was going to be heard this Thursday, October 31, before the Philadelphia court.
Immersed in this new matter, the billionaire shows, however, the extent of his resources. According to journalist Teddy Schleifer of the New York Times, his lawyers requested a postponement of the hearing. Therefore, the lottery issue will no longer be handled at the Pennsylvania state level but at the national level. A potential risk to which Musk voluntarily exposes himself but which gives him time before his hearing. In the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, where he was to be tried, 12 of the 20 judges are pro-Democrats.
Pennsylvania, strategic objective
Since October 19, Elon Musk has organized this giant lottery only in the undecided states, these key states in the US presidential elections where voting intentions are very close. The state of Pennsylvania in particular is in the crosshairs of Republicans. Of the seven swing states, it has the most voters (19), which explains why it is so popular.
As part of the lottery, Musk named the top three winners from Pennsylvania residents present at Republican meetings. He also offered $100 to anyone who signed the petition in that state alone.
Trump and Harris’ voting intentions in Pennsylvania were tied in the October 19 polls. As of now, the Republican candidate has a small lead of 0.6% over the Democrat.
