OpenAI officially launches its own search engine to compete with Google

OpenAI announced the launch of ChatGPT Search, an extension of its ChatGPT AI. At the moment, it is only accessible to paying subscribers.

OpenAI announced on Thursday the launch of an Internet search engine, an extension of its ChatGPT generative artificial intelligence (AI) interface, a functionality that is seen as a competitor to Google, a benchmark in the sector.

Unlike ChatGPT, which relies on a finite amount of data accumulated within a database, ChatGPT Search, OpenAI’s new service, will pull online items to answer queries.

Future competition for Google

With ChatGPT Search, users will be able to perform a search manually by clicking on a dedicated icon. Otherwise, the chatbot can search the web based on what was asked. You will be able to respond with information from the web and it will be possible to go further with follow-up questions. “ChatGPT will take into account the full context of your conversation to get a better response for you,” OpenAI assured.

At the moment, ChatGPT Search is only available to subscribers of ChatGPT Plus (22.99 euros per month) and ChatGPT Team (from $25 per user per month). Users registered on the SearchGPT waiting list, the prototype of the search engine presented last July, will also be able to access it from this Thursday, October 31. On the other hand, free users will still have to wait a few months.

This announcement comes as Meta, Facebook’s parent company, is working on its own artificial intelligence search engine to reduce its dependence on Google, but also on Microsoft.
