A reference title in Elon Musk’s bag? After Twitter, the billionaire could well be interested in the supposedly progressive MSNBC, one of the main news channels in the United States.
To “prepare its activities for future growth,” Comcast has announced the split of its television activities, bringing together MSNBC, CNBC, E!, SyFy, Fandango, USA Network, Rotten Tomatoes, Oxygen and Golf Channel under one new entity. This will allow it to buy new assets, Variety revealed on November 20.
Elon Musk has his eyes on MSNBC
To a lesser extent, and although Comcast has not mentioned it, this would above all allow an interested buyer to afford this very powerful branch in terms of audience and viewer profiles. The crown jewel, MSNBC, supported Kamala Harris and staunchly opposed Donald Trump during the US campaign.
In any case, the news greatly amused Elon Musk. The billionaire responded to an offer from far-right podcaster Joe Rogan, who wanted to take the place of Rachael Maddow, MSNBC’s star journalist, who is openly gay. He explained that the idea was “wonderful” before “accepting it” with a fire, rocket, and laughing-crying smiley face emoji.
Shortly before, it was Donald Trump Jr himself, son of Donald Trump, who challenged Elon Musk to take over MSNBC. “I have the funniest idea in the world,” he told the billionaire.
“How much does it cost?” he responded.
The little phrase seems harmless, but we remember that the acquisition of Twitter (which has since become X) came after a series of jokes by the African-American businessman.
What a priori was just a joke, led to the purchase for several tens of billions of dollars. He took the opportunity to fire 80% of the platform’s staff, especially on the moderation side, and above all restored access to accounts banned for misinformation and racism.
However, for MSNBC it is unlikely at this time that such an acquisition will see the light of day, as Comcast is not a seller.
However, we know that Elon Musk has made the eradication of “wokism” one of his goals. He will de facto join the incoming Trump administration with ambitions to drastically reduce federal government spending.
