World Cup in Qatar: CNIL advises fans to use disposable phones

France’s data protection authority advises fans traveling to Qatar to get a burner phone to avoid being spied on by local authorities.

With Qatar accused of spying on critical figures with its actions just days before the FIFA World Cup, France’s data protection authority, the CNIL, is giving some advice to fans traveling to Qatar.

The CNIL points out that it is preferable to use a disposable phone or an old rebooted mobile. In question, foreigners traveling to the country must download two mobile apps: the official World Cup app, Hayya, and the Covid tracking app, Ehteraz. But these are accused of being spyware for the Qatari authorities. They would give them broad access to the data, as well as the ability to read, delete or modify the content and even make direct calls, consider the media Political.

take precautions

For fans who do not have a blank phone, the CNIL recommends that they install the app just before their departure and delete it as soon as they return to France. They are also encouraged to connect to secure Wi-Fi networks and have strong passwords.

The country also requires foreign fans not to take photos that may violate local laws. Filming in government buildings, schools, migrant worker accommodation, places of worship and hospitals will also be banned.

The CNIL also advises you to be especially vigilant about files stored on your mobile, which could violate Qatari laws that prohibit, for example, LGBT content.

About 1.5 million visitors are expected for this World Cup. The sporting event was marred by controversy, including abusive working conditions, concerns about the Gulf state’s treatment of LGBTQ+ people, and press freedom.
