A second wave of mass firings at Twitter, started by new boss Elon Musk, took place on Sunday, November 13, both in the United States and around the world. Although almost half of the employees had been laid off at the beginning of November, these new measures could have a significant impact on the moderation system of the social network, according to an internal source contacted by the American journalist Casey Newton.
Twitter’s moderation system, which regulates hateful or inappropriate content, already suffered from a lack of human resources, with fewer than 2,000 moderators worldwide for around 400 million users, or about one moderator for every 200,000. users. This new wave of layoffs could make it even more inefficient.
Moderation and marketing affected
According to information from Casey Newton, in addition to moderation, the layoffs affect the management of the company’s property and the marketing sector. As in the first layoffs, subcontracted workers “are not notified [de leur licenciement], they just lose access to Slack and their mailbox. Team leaders realize this when they realize their employees have simply disappeared from the system.”
“A team leader just posted on Slack: One of my employees was just deactivated without notice, while in the process of making major changes regarding child safety on the network.” A situation that resembles the first dismissals, whose affected employees testified to the brutality of the procedure.
