TikTok: The Assembly approves the creation of an investigation commission

The National Assembly approved the creation of a research commission on the psychological effects of Tiktok on children and adolescents. The platform is regularly indicated by its algorithm that is considered too addictive.

Now it is acted. The deputies approved, this Thursday, March 13, a proposal for a transparty resolution aimed at creating a research commission on the psychological effects of Tiktok on children and adolescents.

And the commission should have a job to do. Thirty deputies will be responsible for studying the Tiktok algorithm for six months and the psychological repercussions of the application in children and adolescents. In particular, they will have to determine whether the application encourages the passage to the suicidal act and Self -ilation In young people or if it amplifies the hypersexualized content that develops eating disorders.

Algorithm too addictive

According to the macronist deputy Laure Miller, at the origin of this proposal for transpartean resolution, the Commission will also have to focus “specifically” on the measures really implemented by the social network and verify if they are “a kind of empty shell”, she specifies AFP.

Another mission: The Commission will be responsible for proposing concrete measures aimed at protecting children and adolescents, particularly in terms of content regulation, digital security and platform practices.

In fact, the platform is often indicated by its impact on young users. In the heart of the problem: its recommendation algorithm, accused of numerous studies, as the most likely to ignite Internet users in an avalanche of homogeneous and repetitive content.

This algorithm is even considered “too addictive” for young people according to the European Commission, which opened a formal investigation in February 2024. For its part, Amnesty International also worried about the psychological effects of the application in young people.

Suicides and eating disorders

Combined in collective, seven families filed a complaint last November against Tiktok. They accuse the social network of encouraging their children to commit suicide by exposing them to the dangerous content related to suicide, self -healing and eating disorders. According to France Info, on March 6, four new families joined the complaint.

According to a global Questudio study, in 2022, minors spent an average of 1h47 per day in Tiktok. And, if the theoretically prohibits platform for children under 13 to register on the social network, Internet users can easily lie about their age. As proof, almost one in two in two years of 11 to 12 years is recorded there, according to the Arcom statistics.
