Presented almost a year ago, the new Atlas of Boston Dynamics has already been impressive for its abilities. Not only can it move objects independently, but you can also make jumps and bombs.
And its creator does not plan to stop there. On March 19, he published a video on YouTube to show the new capabilities of his humanoid robot. In this, Atlas begins walking, then running and crawling. The robot then makes some gymnastics figures, including a wheel, and breaks dance movements.
“Advance in humanoid robots”
Boston Dynamics was able to learn these new skills in his robot thanks to an association with Robotics and AI (RAI) Institute, a research organization aimed at solving the most important and fundamental problems in artificial and robotics. Announced in February, this collaboration aims to “advance humanoid robots thanks to strengthening learning.”
This method allows systems to learn to carry out actions through experience. As part of this project, Boston Dynamics and the RAI Institute will significantly improve the locomotion of Atlas, the ability that allows you to manipulate objects and devices such as doors or levers, while moving, to improve its usefulness.
Boston Dynamics also has other partners to help him with his humanoid robots. On March 18, on the occasion of the annual NVIDIA conference, the manufacturer announced to extend its collaboration with the IA fleas giant with the aim of “developing the next generation of AI capacities for humanoid robots.”
