Already using artificial intelligence to determine the age of users (in some cases), Instagram will go further. The social network announced Monday, April 21 that it was going to use it to detect accounts belonging to minors, in the United States to begin.
If AI determines that an account belongs to a minor, it will become a teenage account. Last September on Instagram, these accounts are aimed at better protecting users under 18, with limits in terms of use and interactions. Since the beginning of April, they have also been imposed on minors on Facebook and Messenger.
Not reliable technology
Aware that its technology is not reliable, Instagram claims to take measures to ensure that it is precise while providing users with the possibility of modifying their parameters in case of an error.
With this technology, the social network intends to better protect minors, but also seeks to reassure parents who “do not always have time to verify [les] Parameters “of their children. Distvently, they can create an adult profile with a false birth date, because the platform has not configured any tool to verify the default value.
In addition to using AI for this purpose, Instagram will also begin to send them notifications about “how they can have conversations with their teenagers about the importance of indicating the right online.”
