The Spanish electricity network manager dismissed the track of a cyber attack on Tuesday to explain the origin of the giant breakdown that hit the entire Iberian Peninsula on Monday, ensuring that it would not have detected “without intrusion” in its control systems.
“In view of the analyzes that we have been able to carry out so far, we can rule out a cybersecurity incident in the facilities of the Electricity, Eduardo Prieto, director of Ree Director of Operations.
A track also excluded by the Portuguese government
According to this official, Ree has collaborated in the last hours with the National Center for Spanish Intelligence (CNI), but also with the National Center for the Protection of Critical Infrastructure (CNPIC) and the National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE) to examine the causes of breakdown.
“We are still waiting to receive information from certain actors in the sector, in particular the generation control centers, to have all the information, a complete photo of the data and, therefore, refine the analysis and draw the appropriate conclusions,” he explained.
For its part, the Portuguese government also dismissed the route of a cyber attack on Tuesday. “In Portugal, we have no information related to a cyber attack or a hostile assault at this stage. It is the preliminary evaluation of the various services,” said the Minister of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Government, Antonio Leitao Amaro, specifying in an interview with the CNN Portugal Canal that “would be a problem in the transport network” “
This giant collapse occurred on Monday at 12:33 pm Spanish (10:33 GMT) and touched the entire peninsula. It caused chaos in both Portugal and Spain, where the inhabitants were deprived of the current, but also of the Internet and mobile telephony.
According to Mr. Perieto, the Spanish electrical system, which had recovered more than 99% on Tuesday morning, is now completely operational: “It works in a normal and stable way,” he said.
