Scams with false packages are not new. For several years, criminals have pretended to be delivered in messages to steal the personal and banking data of their victim. They have already been reported, especially Cybermalveillance.gouv.fr, on several occasions.
But these scams become more realistic, criminals now use their victims’ names and surnames to cheat them better. “It is the distributor of which I have a package in the XX that did not enter the mailbox, choose a relay,” indicate these messages by choosing the real names and names of the target.
Steal personal data from victims
Upon receiving this type of SMS, the French can really think that a package will reach their name. But they can also receive these messages, since they really expect a package and, therefore, they will be more inclined to click on the link that appears at the end of the message.
With these SMS, criminals seek to encourage their victim to click on this link, which redirects it to a site that mimics the Mondial relief and seems legitimate. He will then be invited to inform his personal and bank information.
The Crooks know the names and surnames of their recipients through the piracy of a real company in which their personal data is recorded, as TF1 recalled last October.
But if scams with false packages become more realistic, it is always possible to avoid falling into the trap. You can significantly look at the sender number because services such as Mondial Relay, the post or colissimo do not send messages with a number that begins with 06, 07 or 09. In case of doubt, it is also better to contact the transport company in charge of the package to confirm the message, as advised by Cybermalvence.gouv.fr.
