Unable to ensure that the personal data of its European users are well protected in China and in the old continent, particularly due to Beijing’s potential access, Tiktok was sentenced in the EU on Friday to a fine of 530 million euros.
It accuses the social network, which admitted having violated the European Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). According to the DPC, Tiktok could not guarantee that the data of European users were protected by Chinese laws in terms of surveillance. The authority also criticizes it for not having been transparent enough with users.
During the investigation, carried out in the name of the EU by the Irish Data Protection (DPC), the powerful platform, owned by a Chinese group, also admitted that it has housed European data in China, which has so far denied.
