Should I really use private navigation to reserve your cheapest tickets?

To go on vacation without spending too much money, there are many tips, but not all are true.

It is like grandmother’s remedies, often also urban legends, but they have a hard tooth. Tips for vacation by spending as little as possible on swarm on social networks or on YouTube.

One of the most widespread is to go to a hotel and travel reservation site, but using a private navigation accessible from all browsers.

The false idea of private navigation

However, a great intention that does not allow prices to be reduced. As the Flytrippers specialized site explains, it is not the type of navigation that fluctuates prices, but the travel industry: “The mechanism to fix the prices of air tickets is very complex,” specifies the site, “prices change constantly.”

All agencies work in the same way, prices will change according to demand. For example, if a hotel has fewer rooms on a special date, prices will increase mechanically. The same goes for plane tickets.

Airlines and hotels will increase prices in case of high demand. During the Olympic Games of Paris 2024, the offers were particularly high. As well as for the Universal Osaka exhibition in Japan, which takes place until the fall of 2025, and exploiting the prices of the rooms and plane tickets.

Very practical tools available

Some sites have also developed tools to know when it is better to go on vacation. In Kayak, a site specialized in tickets, hotel rooms, car rentals and several trips, a tool allows you to select a destination (and a starting point) with a period of time, from 4 to 15 days.

From there, the site will not only recommend months to leave, in our example, to go to Tokyo, Kayak recommends the month of November, but will also give several graphics that show the average price developments in recent months. Therefore, we can see that in August, going to Japan is clearly not economical.

The Cnil, the French personal data gendarme, also undermined the tracker theory in the travel sites. The fact that you have already come to verify a price does not matter in the rise (or reduction) of prices. Private navigation, which allows to partially erase its trail by not saving any cookie, the situation will not change.

In a common relationship with the competence authority, the CNIL had pointed out that the controls carried out had not made possible “to notice any practice that consists in modulating the rates shown according to the IP address of the Internet user.”
