A “crucial opportunity”: 12 European mobile operators beg a more frequency band for 6g deployment

In a letter sent, the 12 European operators, of which Orange, urge Europe to give them a new radio frequency band.

Twelve of the largest European mobile operators argued on Wednesday the allocation of more frequency bands to develop the 6G network, in a letter sent to the European Commission.

The letter, published by the World Sector Association (GSMA), was sent to the European Commission and aimed at national regulators, Orange said. In the text, significantly signed by Orange, Telefónica, Telecom Italia (Tim) and British Telecom (BT Group), the operators “urged Europe” to assign them a new radio frequency band.

A request that relates to the upper part of the 6 GHz frequency band, described as “crucial opportunity for 6G launch in Europe.”

The question of the assignment of the 6 GHz frequency band

This next generation of mobile network, which should be successful in 5G by 2030, will improve flow and latency (deadline), but also the new uses of the network, for example, in terms of location and environmental detection. But the implementation of this new network is based on the possibility of using certain radio frequency bands.

The latter are shared between different uses, in particular between the mobile and the Wi -Fi, and the European Commission has in this area of harmonization power in the use of frequencies.

In an article published online in November 2024, the National National Frequency Agency (ANFR) described the issue of the assignment of the high frequency band of 6GHz as a “relentless struggle between the community of mobile networks and those of Wi -Fi”.
