A secret project that is a bit revealed. For two years, Openai Chief Sam Altman and Apple Jony Ive designer have been working discreetly to design a device fed by artificial intelligence.
But for a few months, the two partners have been accelerating. This Wednesday, May 21, they announced the acquisition of the products Jony Ive Startup, IO, for Operai for $ 6.5 billion. “The IO team (…) will now merge with Openai to work more closely with the research, engineering and products of San Francisco,” they said in a statement.
After this announcement, Sam Altman and Jony Ive gave some clues about their secret project at a meeting with OpenAi employees, reveals the Wall Street Journal, which could hear a recording of it.
A “partner”
As the American newspaper reminds us, this future device will not be a smartphone, the two partners wish to help users dismiss the screens. During the meeting, Sam Altman said it will not be a couple of glasses, while Jony Ive was skeptical about a device to use it.
With Bloomberg, the former man on the right of Steve Jobs has also criticized two similar projects: the PIN and the human Rabbit R1, calling them “low quality products.” If the first, which was presented as the smartphone of the future, no longer exists today, the second continues its path without being a success.
According to Jony Ive and Sam Altman, their device can perfectly analyze the user’s environment and life. Discreet, you can hold in your pocket or place on a desk. It will even be the third essential device placed on a desk after a MacBook Pro and an iPhone according to them.
During the meeting, Sam Altman also presented this future produced as a “partner”, hoping that it is an integral part of our daily life and sells 100 million. “We are not going to deliver 100 million airplanes from day one,” he said, predicting, however, that Optai could “faster than any other company has never delivered 100 million innovative devices.”
With Jony Ive, its objective is to market this device at the end of next year. Meanwhile, he believes that discretion will be essential for their success, to prevent their competitors from copying them before their product is ready.
