“Infernal and Mortal Spiral”: Deputy Laure Miller invites the Cannes Festival to “reconsider” her association with Tiktok

Laure Miller, raptor of the Research Commission on the psychological effects of the social network in minors denounces a “problematic platform” and regrets that the festival “has not participated in this land of the rights of our children.”

The problems accumulate for Tiktok. Official partner of the Cannes Film Festival since 2022, the application of short videos has reduced a place of choice on the red carpet over the years. Since then, the number of influential people and creators of content in the croisette has increased dramatically.

If most cameramen have managed to integrate into this very select event, which takes place from May 13 to 24, the association with the platform remains particularly criticized. As the Parisians report, Laure Miller, a reporter for a research commission on the psychological effects of Tiktok in minors, invited the organizers of the event to reconsider this association.

“We manipulate our children”

“Tiktok accompanies the stars in their rise to steps and, at the same time, encloses many children in an infernal and mortal spiral. I invite the Cannes Festival to reconsider this association and ask about the responsibility that such an election implies,” the member launched by X, ex-twitter, this May 22.

“Tiktok is obviously a problematic platform, so it seems to me that it is inappropriate to say the least to promote it,” added Laure Miller, interviewed in France Inter.

In fact, the application algorithm is often criticized, accused of numerous studies as the most prone to enclose Internet users in an avalanche of homogeneous and repetitive content, sometimes very dangerous.

“If you have the misfortune of spending a few more seconds in a video, even because it surprises it, the algorithm considers that these are happy that you like and block it in problematic content, which can be scarification, suicide promotion …”, confirms Laure Miller.

And the consequences of this algorithm can be dramatic. In total, eleven French families assigned Tiktok to court, accusing the social network for having recommended videos of minors who promote suicide, self -control or eating disorders.

It is precisely these mechanics that the Tiktok commission in the National Assembly wants to clarify. Thirty deputies are responsible for studying the algorithm of the application of short videos and their Psychological repercussions In children and adolescents. The conclusions of the committee will be presented no later than September 12.

For its part, the social network claims to apply “strict rules” to protect its community and eliminate “98% of the contents that break them.” The application offers, for example, parents of Screen time limit From their children at 60 minutes.
