Apple doesn’t know how to count? According to Bloomberg Media, the next iPhone update will not be called iOS 19 but iOS 26. Since 2008 with iPhone OS 1, Apple has accustomed us to name its iOS versions by a number and each new version increases this number of 1.
But after iOS 18, no more additions. The numbers will now correspond to the year during which the update will be implemented mainly. With an excursion scheduled for September 2025, the iPhone will run in iOS 26 until September 2026.
A standardization project
iOS is not the only one to obtain this preferential treatment. The other Apple Bones will benefit from the same numbering system. Finis iPados 18, Macos 15, Watchos 12, Tvos 18 or Visishes 2. Therefore, future updates will be called ipados 26, macOS 26, Watchos 26, Tvos 26 and Visisses 26, the opportunity for Apple to standardize the numbering of all its operating systems.
This initiative is correlated with an important Apple project planned for this year. The Cupertino company suggests for several months that they want to establish a reinforced collaboration operation between all its devices and bones.
We learned, for example, in March that Apple could completely review the design of the interfaces of its devices. “The style of icons, menus, applications, windows and grains of the system” must be homogenized around a design similar to that of pro vision.
The official announcement of this new nomenclature is scheduled for WWDC, the Grand Conference of Apple, which will take place on June 9, 2025.
