Smart telephone, computer, bicycle, electric scooter … Lithium batteries equip many devices. However, they are very sensitive to temperatures. Although France is affected by a heat wave, some precautions must be taken with respect to these batteries. These are the good practices to follow.
Do not expose your device at high temperatures
Lithium batteries work better in an ambient temperature range. The devices equipped with these should not be exposed or loaded at too high temperatures, that is, beyond 35 degrees.
“Avoid using or recharging your device when the temperature of your surroundings is greater than 35 ° C, since this can permanently reduce battery life,” Apple said, for example, on a support page dedicated to the maintenance of the iPhone battery.
A recommendation that also applies to Android smartphones. Similarly, it is not recommended to display your electric bike or scooter to the sun. It is better to keep these devices in the shade as much as possible outside.
Limit the load
Exhausted batteries faster during warm climate, it is necessary to preserve them. For this, it is especially recommended to use the original charger and cable (or certificates). Because some chargers, who sell cheaper, can be dangerous. They are not always up to the standards, they can damage a smartphone or other device, but also cause fires.
Nor is it recommended to recharge these types of devices when temperatures are too high. In other words, it is better to wait for temperatures to fall. This, because devices such as smartphones or electric scooters are heated during load. And if they heat too much, the recharge can be slow down or interrupted.
During the warm climate, the iPhone can show, for example, a notification that indicates that the recharge is pending and that “it will resume when it has found a normal temperature”, because it is too hot.
However, if you need to recharge your device, reduce load time as much as possible. Finally, to preserve your battery, you can also activate the “energy savings” mode, which avoids requesting it too much.
Beyond heat periods, certain practices must be applied in general. Among the use of the device during load, which is not recommended, since it can overheat the battery. It is also better to avoid loading your smartphone, bike or electric scooter at night or when you are not at home.
