Influencers, masculinism, only fans … The government launches a mission to understand digital problems

As an extension of the 2023 Influencers Law, the Government wishes to better understand the new challenges in the influence sector and propose regulatory paths.

Ultrapopular male influential on the platforms, the tendency of the skinny that concerns health specialists, cyberbullying increased … in recent months, criticisms on social networks have become increasingly numerous.

Given this situation, the Government announced on Wednesday, July 2, the launch of a mission responsible for analyzing the emerging problems of digital problems. This mission was entrusted to two parliamentarians: Stéphan Vojetta, deputy of the French established outside France and Arthur Delaport, deputy of Calvados and president of the Tiktok commission in the National Assembly.

An extension of the Law of influence

The two men are the source of Law that frames the influence sector. An essential first step to end the jungle law in certain influential people, but remains insufficient. In fact, since June 2023, new problems have emerged.

And the list of new problems is long. The two parliamentarians evoke pell-mell “masculinism, sexism or hate online” that swarm on platforms, live matches in Tiktok “that operate in the manner of casinos”, “forms of digital prostitution” as only onwards, screens addiction or misinformation, especially in health subjects.

With the risk of encouraging dangerous practices, especially for minors, very present in social networks. According to a survey conducted by the National Data Protection Commission, 59% of children aged 11 to 14 are registered in one or more social networks. A figure that increases to 95% for children 15-18.

Better supervise the sector

The objective of the mission is to extend the work of the Influencers Law. For six months, deputies will have to identify these new risks caused by digital practices and offer regulatory routes to better supervise the sector.

The mission will also focus on the best way to structure and protect the content creation sector, so that it does not depend exclusively on brands and other commercial publications. The final conclusions are expected by December 2025, no later than.

In recent months, the pressure has been accentuated around the content and platform creation ecosystem. Several influencers have seen their accounts eliminated, after being reported by members of the Government. This is the case of Ad Laurent or Amine Mojito.

Last March, the National Assembly approved last March the creation of a research commission on the psychological effects of Tiktok on children and adolescents responsible for studying the platform algorithm and proposing clues to better regulate platforms. The final conclusions of the Commission will be presented no later than September 12.
