It is “crucial” for London and Paris to work together in artificial intelligence (AI) to catch up with Europe in Washington and Beijing, said Emmanuel Macron on a state visit to the United Kingdom.
The United Kingdom and France “lead the race in Europe, but we are delaying compared to the United States and China,” according to Mr. Macron, who spoke in English during a round table on AI in the London University Imperial College.
“The association between the United Kingdom and France is crucial, because we are facing exactly the same challenges, and joining together is the best way to achieve a critical mass in our talents, our laboratories, our key players or our financing capacities,” he added.
“Fasten strategic priorities quickly”
Several scientific and technological agreements have been announced outside the visit of Mr. Macron, including a new joint engineering laboratory between Imperial College of London and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS).
“From Concorde to the Canal Tunnel, the Franco-British collaboration gave birth to the emblematic skill of engineering,” said Hugh Brady, president of Imperial College in London, in a press release.
“I am not sure that I have solved better migratory and financial problems after the Brexit than with the EU,” Macron said during the round table, bitten in the United Kingdom. Before emphasizing the fact that “the closest links are the best way to solve our crucial problems in research, science, AI, etc.”.
London, however, was clearly distant in the EU in AI, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, declared in January to attract companies in the sector by allowing them to prove their innovations in their soil before any regulation.
On the contrary, in the EU, dozens of European companies have just asked Brussels to postpone the implementation of their regulations to supervise the AI, warning that going too quickly to damage innovation.
