The United States is trying to be imposed on a European digital law. This is the Digital Markets Law (DMA), digital market regulations. Upon entering into force in March 2024, its objective is to maintain healthy competition among the actors in the sector, in particular when imposing rules on GAFAM. According to Euronews, Washington wants a new advisory agency to be created for this law, composed of the same companies, mainly American, affected by it. An idea far from pleased with the European Union.
Commercial tensions
Washington’s demand occurs in the midst of a commercial war between the United States and the EU. The two parties are currently in negotiation, after Donald Trump announced, on July 12, the imposition of customs duties of 30% for the EU as of August 1. However, the European Commission said it was ready to adopt “countermeasures if necessary.”
Beyond commercial tensions, Washington’s demand calls into question the EU’s ability to enforce its rules without external interference. This, especially because it already has a council composed of independent experts, representatives of the national authorities and the competent regulatory organizations for the DMA.
The commission, which has already imposed fines under this law, also assured in the past that it was impossible for him to return to his digital rules. “We are going to defend our sovereignty. We will defend the way we implement our rules, we will defend a market that works well and we will not allow anyone to tell us what we have to do,” said his vice president, Teresa Ribera, in Euronews at the end of June.
