Russia; Dozens of canceled flights after a cyber attack claimed by Belarus and Ukrainian computer pirates

The Aeroflot airline was forced to cancel several flights after being attacked by computer pirates.

Bielarusses and Ukrainian computer pirates claimed a cyber attack on Monday against the Russian Aeroflot airline, which led to the cancellation of about 54 flights according to this company.

“We are announcing the successful implementation of a long -term operation already a large scale that led to piracy and destruction of the internal infrastructure of TI of Aeroflot”, the group of Ukrainian computer pirates, “Silent Crow”, and that of Bélarusse computer pirates, “cyber supporters” in a joint press release.

The computer pirates claimed to have “destroyed” 7,000 airline servers and said they wanted to publish the personal data of all the Russians who had traveled with Aeroflot.

Lack of computer security

The attack was possible thanks to the company’s lack of computer security, said the group “Cyber Supports” in another statement published later.

Belarusian computer pirates said the Aeroflot CEO, Sergei Alexandrovski, has facilitated their password that has not changed since 2022, and that the airline has used obsolete systems, including “Windows XP and Windows 2003”.

Russian prosecution announced that it has opened an investigation for “illegitimate access” to information systems, indicating that Aeroflot was the victim of a “cyber attack.” The Russian telecommunications surveillance agency Roskomnadzor has not confirmed data leaks, according to the Russian news agency Ria Novosti, or Aeroflot, which qualifies the incident of “Falla of the computer system”.

An “quite alarming” incident

The airline said it had canceled 54 flights on Monday, especially from the Chermetievo airport in Moscow, its main base and “currently work to restore its normal operations as quickly as possible.”

Air traffic interruptions are regularly involved in Russia in recent months, mainly due to the attacks of Ukrainian drones launched in Russian bombings in Ukraine, where the Russian army has carried out a large large -scale offensive since February 2022.

However, this is the first incident of this magnitude caused by a cyber attack.
The Kremlin judged this “quite alarming” incident. “Of course, we will clarify the information and expect an appropriate explanation,” said his spokesman Dmitri Peskov to journalists.

Ukraine and its western allies regularly accuse Russia of cyber attacks against computer and private organizations computer systems worldwide, accusations rejected by Moscow.

In early July, the Europol and Eurojust agencies announced the dismantling of the Hackers Prorussian Noname057 (16) Hackers Group (16), in their own head of multiple attacks aimed at Ukraine and its allies, which went to a significant infrastructure in Europe.
