Use artificial intelligence to better protect minors. This is what YouTube plans to do. The Google video platform has announced that it would use this technology to estimate the accounts that belong to minors as of August 13, only in the United States at the moment.
More specifically, it will be an age estimation model, which will use several indicators (YouTube activity, antiquity of the account …) to determine if a user is less than 18 years old. This measure will apply “anyone who enters the date of birth when creating their account”, warned YouTube on a support page.
Reminders to go to bed
In the event that the AI model believes that a user is lower, will benefit from the same protections as those applied to teenage accounts. Specifically, you will not have access to videos undergoing age limit and will only see non -personalized ads. You will also receive reminders to take breaks and sleep. YouTube will also limit repeated recommendations of videos on sensitive issues (body image …).
Aware that your AI model can be incorrect, the platform indicates that users will be able to verify their age by submitting an official identity document, a selfie or a credit card if this is the case.
The deployment of this AI model is not really a surprise. Google had already announced it earlier this year, as part of its efforts to protect minors. The company also said that this technology will be offered gradually in other countries after the United States.
This occurs when countries are increasingly numerous to impose an age verification on social networks and other platforms to protect minors. This is the case of Utah in the United States, but also from the United Kingdom for a few days. For its part, France will test an online age verification application to prevent minors from accessing dangerous content.
