A new feature on Instagram that cares. “It is currently turning its location to perfect strangers on the Internet!” He exclaims a surfer who faces the camera, vilely in a video seen by tens of thousands of Internet users.
On Wednesday, August 6, Instagram deployed a new feature. Called “Card”, this option, similar to that of Snapchat, allows Internet users to share their location and see those of other users. The objective? “Allow everyone to keep in touch with their friends more easily,” said the platform.
“I got sick”
The HIC is that, according to several Internet users, the precise location of an individual could now be accessible to any Internet, depending on the selected security parameters, which generates concerns about the protection of user privacy.
Internet users quickly began to share fears on social networks. As a result, dozens of videos and publications have been shared to warn against this new characteristic. They combine tens or even hundreds of thousands of points of view.
“My location was on and my personal address was visible to all my subscribers,” added another user. “I turned it out immediately as soon as I knew, but it became very ill.”
An option deactivated by default
Given the scale of critics, Adam Mosseri, patron of the social network, sought to reassure its users. “Its location will only be shared * If * decides to share it, and if it does, it is possible to do so that with a limited group of people you choose,” he wrote in Threads.
In fact, functionality is not activated by default. Users must accept the location exchange function so that their location is visible to others. If you want to share your location, it will only be visible by your Instagram friends or by a group you have selected.
While the functionality is activated, the user’s location is updated when it opens or returns in the application. It is also possible to deactivate the option at any time, going to the configuration.
