The countdown is launched. As CNN Business, AOL (for American Online), pointed out an American Internet provider, announced in a note that its low -speed Internet services would stop since September 30, 2025.
This news sounds the end of an era for web access technologies. AOL was one of the historical internet suppliers in the United States and worldwide in the 1990s. Since then, the company has consumed over the years, counting only a few thousand internet customers in the United States in 2021, according to the CNBC.
Obsolete technology
The low internet flow, or the Internet per switching line, was very common to web stutters. This type of connection was established through a standard telephone line in which a modem was connected. But this technology quickly became obsolete, replaced by the ADSL in the 2000s. The low -speed internet has almost disappeared from all homes.
It should be said that this technology no longer offers a desirable Internet connection, around 56 KB/second with a 56K modem. By way of comparison, the current average fiber flow in France is 8,300 times faster.
An ephemeral success in France
AOL also had its moment of glory in France with its subsidiary Aol France. Just landed at the end of the 1990s, the American company was rapidly implemented by offering low -speed Internet subscriptions for one hundred francs.
But over the years, Broadband (ADSL) has quickly competed in the low speed proposed by AOL. In 2006, the company renounced its activities as a provider of Internet services per switching line in French territory.
The low flow in the endangered process
In any case, the low flow tends to disappear in France. According to ARCEP, low -price income has decreased 15 % every year for more than fifteen years. In addition, France goes to a progressive dismantling of its copper network that began in January 2025 and will end in 2030.
Copper will soon give way to fiber optics. It will soon be said to say goodbye to the Internet of low flow, but also on the landline and the ADSL.
