Apple has announced in a press release that reintegrated the functionality that measures oxygen levels in the blood in its range of watches in the United States. Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 should be able to benefit “later” from the function.
This measurement tool had been eliminated from American watches after the accusations of a medical device manufacturer, Masimo. The last block reproached for copying its oxygen level detection technology in the blood. This has led to the prohibition of several Apple Watch models in stores in the United States since January 2024.
The measure available on the iPhone
To avoid attracting Masimo’s wrath again, Apple has changed the functioning of the tool, according to an American customs decision. According to the edge, instead of showing the oxygen level directly on the clock, the data will be accessible in the health application on the owner’s iPhone.
A nonsense since the oximeter remains in Apple Watch, but allowing Apple to be able to market its watches again in the United States. The French models, on the other hand, will not be affected by this new measure.
New turn, therefore, in the dispute between Apple and Masimo. The two US companies have rushed for years about this technology. In 2020, Masimo had attacked Apple without success. But the company will wait 2021 and the launch of the Apple Watch series (which incorporates an oximeter) to present a new complaint to the International Trade Center (ITC) for “Violation of Patents”.
This last complaint will result in a watches block with an oximeter. A victory for Masimo, which lasted until today.
