Perplexity announces that they want to share their income with the means used by their AI

The perplexity of the new Californian company offers a new type of association to share its income with the media whose news is used by its generative AI model, with an initial envelope of $ 42.5 million.

Several media groups have already completed similar agreements with the main AI actors, such as News Corp (Wall Street Journal and Daily Telegraph, among others), Le Monde, The Washington Post or Axel Springer (Politico, Bild and Die Welt) with Openai, Associated Press With Google, New York Times with Amazon or AFP “Looting” of content.

Profits distributed by more than 80% of income

The novelty of the association proposed by perplexity is based on the principle of grouping the income derived from a future subscription, called “Comet Plus”, which will give access, for 5 dollars per month, to the content of the associated editors, with whom the profits will be distributed.

“The perplexity maintains 20% of the income group to cover the calculation costs of the computer and distributes 80% to the participating editors,” said the company requested by AFP.

The “Comet Plus” subscription will be available “during the complete launch of the web browser and the personal assistant of AI” that perplexity develops, on a date it is not yet specified. Navigator, accessible only by invitation, and is also a victim of a security defect.

A fair exchange

The revenues of the editors will be calculated in proportion to the use of their content according to three different uses: when users consult their sites thanks to the AIA assistant, when perplexity data collection robots access articles to answer user questions or when the AI ​​agent carries out complex tasks thanks to the media content.

This association is launched in a period in which many creators and publishers criticize the main actors of the generative AI for using their content to create commercial services, without permission or remuneration.

Several complaints have been filed, such as Reddit against Anthrope or the New York Times against Openai. Perplexity is not himself saved. Two main Japanese, Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun media filed a complaint against the violation of the copyright of the United States. The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post also launched prosecution against perplexity in 2024.
