Look Ultra 3: We tried its satellite connection, Apple’s Watch is more than ever for the outdoor

Apple’s most advanced clock is available, a third decline that changes little in the form and wins above all the satellite connection for emergency messages or daily communications, outside the network.

Never alone. It is a bit of the consignment of the Apple Watch Ultra 3, which arrives on September 19 and remains the brand’s premium clock, at a high price (of 899 euros), connected, always more. In addition to 4G and 5G, Ultra 3 can communicate by satellite when the user is in a white area.

In summary, its positioning, such as its slightly higher range, is justified by Apple, with some new features, apart, it could be said, but that should delight the most demanding and sports users.

A clock always so robust, cut for VI (re) and outdoors

Apple does not want to renew your Apple Watch Ultra every year and, ultimately, it is a good idea as it has done under the hood. Then, two years after the arrival of the Ultra 2 clock, the ultra 3 clock is perfected, improves and brings some new features embedded in a 49 mm (black or silver) case, in the recycled titanium and the finest 12 cm against 1.44 for the Ultra Clock. Despite the refinement of its accommodation of the new ultra announces a set of a configuration, up to 42 hours of normal use.

The ultra 3 watch even offers a larger visualization surface, thanks to the finest panel edges. It is anecdotal, a point of detail on the specific sheet, but helps its use be more pleasant daily. In addition, comfort is reinforced by the screen, still so brilliant and legible in full sun (up to 3,000 nits). The adoption of the LTPO 3 technology, with an update rate, which still varies between 1 and 120 Hz according to its uses, continues to limit the impact on the battery and even seem to contribute to publish the most legible and even brilliant clock …

All this seems to shout that the Ultra 3 Watch is cut for outdoor life (GPS pushed, swimming, diving, path, races …), ready for ultra resistance. In addition, the wrist line, well thought out and practical, if you have your hands taken, allows you to turn the doll travel through a menu, administer music, respond to a notification, etc.

And to perfect the table, Apple adds this year the satellite connection this year. For this, the antennas and the radio module have redesigned to double the power of the signal and allow communication to more than 1,400 km with the GlobalStar Company network (satellites in lowland orbit satells that move more than 24,000 km/h). As a comparison, Starlink satellites are in orbit at 500 km above sea level, telecommunications operators satellites almost 36,000 km.

The Apple Watch is covered in sensors to follow almost all its activities (gyroscope, altimeter, accelerometer, GPS, etc.), your health (cardiofrequency meter, oximeter, ECG) and its condition (temperature, sleep, autumn, accident, etc.). But what to do if, despite all this information, no one can help you? Because Apple thought about the times when there is undoubtedly no more cell connection, or even more iPhone in your flock to make a phone call, send a message and ask for help.

SOS emergency satellite, additional assistance in case of a output failure

This is where the satellite connection takes its complete dimension with the Ultra 3 clock. With the newcomer, it will be possible to send messages, geolocate or ask for help, even without wifi or mobile connection. And now it works as for iPhone with satellite emergency SOS. You constitute 112 (European rescue number, editor’s note) or emergency numbers such as 15 and 18. If you cannot communicate with them, a “satellite emergency message” logo will appear. Then change to a specific interface with all the approach to follow.

The clock then shows a small green pictogram, which indicates that it is in satellite connection. On the screen, an indicator points to the orientation to follow, the journey of a satellite near hanging, to be perfectly on the axis. This is accompanied by a haptic return to the wrist to help you turn in the right direction. If it is in the middle of a valley or rocks, it will be more complicated or more acrobatic to capture the satellite signal than in a transparent area. But it may also require raising the arm, which can go down once the connection is established. If the satellite signal is lost, the clock is automatically resumed with the following.

Once the connection is established, a questionnaire will complete to discover its situation, define the emergency, transmit your contact data to the emergency services or a close Relay Center (several are found) that will then be transferred to the competent services. It is quite fast in transmission and fluid.

For satellite emergency, the service is free for two years. It is also possible to share your position (every 15 minutes as soon as you are out of the network). It will be ideal if you are going to walk in white zone or piste ski, and you want to reassure your loved ones. Similarly, in three pilot regions (Canada, the United States and Mexico), Apple will prove satellite messages between individuals (text, emoji, Memoji). Keep in mind that these last two functions require a cell package on the clock.

A satellite connection that multiplies

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is not the first to show off a satellite connection. The Garmin Fenix 8 Pro already benefits from messages of messages (texts or voices), sharing the location or sending emergency messages, but all in subscription (from 9.99 euros per month) and a higher price (1,199 euros). Google announced the SOS Emergency Alert on its 4G models for its Pixel Watch 4, but will not reach October.

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 remains a connected clock quite massive but robust (housing and screen reinforced on the surface), versatile with its sports and well -being possibilities (the sleep score also makes its appearance) and functional, with its multiple applications to install. The addition of the 5G connection and the satellite, of greater autonomy, gives it even more advantages for the lovers of outdoor activity. We regret that the hypertension detection function is not yet available in the Apple Watch (9 and after) and Ultra series (2 and 3). But Apple promised that it was just a matter of weeks, negotiations with medical validation organizations were well advanced.
