Metarers are not dead … it still moves. During the Connect target conference, Mark Zuckerberg presented “Horizon Engine”, a new game engine aimed at modernizing Horizon Worlds, its virtual reality platform largely neglected since its launch. The objective is clear: to relive the attractiveness of a strategic project for the company, mocked for a long time as an expensive failure.
With Horizon Engine, goal promises a real technological leap: finer graphics, reinforced fluidity and, above all, significantly reduced load times during transitions between virtual universes. The platform can now accommodate up to 100 users simultaneously in the same space, five times more than before.
An evolution that must transform the collective online experience and reposition horizon worlds into the market, while precisely metals are still looking for their audience … and profitability. In fact, the reality laboratories division, responsible for the development of helmets, glasses and software for the metarers, recorded a loss of $ 4.5 billion this quarter, with revenues ascending to only $ 370 million.
Ai directly integrated into the editor
Another pillar of this revival “Meta Horizon Studio”, a creation editor that is based on artificial intelligence. Specifically, it is sufficient to describe in natural language a decoration, an atmosphere or an interactive character for AI to instantly generate the desired universe. One form, according to goal, to transform each user into a creator, into the image “of what Instagram had done for photography.”
These innovations reflect the Meta ambition: to make Horizon Worlds a real social and creative platform, capable of competing with heavy product vehicles such as Roblox or Fortnite. But the task promises to be difficult: the mocked beginnings of the metarers in 2021 left traces, and more technical ads will be needed to convince users, just 300,000 every month. And this for the modest sum of $ 50 billion since its launch.
