Terminal, from Michou, Kaizen, of Staing, a vif, by Jeannot Discatge: how youtubers finance their (super) productions

More and more youtubers offer videos worthy of the big screen. But the financing of these Dantesque projects is far from being a pleasure. If cameramen rarely balance, they can count on the support of the CNC, the scam and above all, the associations.

“Do you think Michou will be there?” On Friday, September 5 at the MK2 Library, it is impossible to escape the general euphoria of the horde of fans against Parisian cinema. Everyone is there to attend the preview of TerminalThe first episode of the YouTubeur Michou series.

In these four episodes worthy of Hollywood production, sixteen of the most followed content creators on YouTube compete in Duet in a man of life size. Everyone has an objective: to be the last team to have escaped from the balls of mysterious shooters.

Colossal budgets

For this little crazy project, The content creator with 10.6 million subscribers saw the big things. The first episode was transmitted in preview in a unique session in almost 500 cinemas. In total, more than 40,000 fans have rushed to the dark rooms to see production, however, available on YouTube the next day.

If as Michou, more and more content creators produce videos worthy of the big screen, the route is far from being tracked. You must hire equipment, rent of filming places, spend hours in assembly, without forgetting marketing and communication, even transmitting in the cinema in certain cases. So many costs that are added one by one to the invoice, also gigantic.

Budgets actually have something to be dizzy. Michou spent no less than one million euros for the four episodes of Terminal. A ventilated amount between the 90 cameras, the team of 150 people or the field of 50 hectares rented for 48 hours of continuous shots.

For your project Stop the trainSqueezie has invested no less than 700,000 euros, in what he describes as “the most expensive” in the history of YouTube in France. “Stoxtag, which transmits his documentary Kaizen: one year to climb Everest In September 2024, he estimated the cost of his project between 600,000 and 1.2 million euros.

In the United States, MRBAST sensational videos exploit the scores. They cost an average between 3 and 4 million dollars. The most often the world has also invested $ 100 million to produce Beast gamesYour controversial reality shows.

A “barrier at the entrance”

To try to finance these costs that are sometimes added faster than the views of a video, creators can count on the support of the National Cinema Center (CNC) and the civil society of multimedia authors (scam). The first has a background dedicated to video creators since 2017. It has been dedicated to the first free transmission projects on the Internet, regardless of duration or format. They can receive up to 30,000 euros through creation assistance, provided they have at least 10,000 subscribers. They must also face their video project, carry out a price and offer a financing plan.

For its part, the scam has unlocked a budget of 40,000 euros every year to help camaragraphs to create documentaries. A sum divided by a dozen creators, whose quantity varies according to the project. Here, there is no need for a provisional budget. However, you must present your video and writing project.

Throughout her research, the young woman listens to the different aids of the scam and the CNC. “There is a true barrier at the entrance to feel legitimate to try,” laments the Utubeuse. “But we must go and ask them. These scholarships are for us.” The content designer then tries the Stock Exchange, which is lost the first time. “For my second attempt, the scam called me to ask me additional information. And I managed to get it. (…) They are really interested in recovering talents if they feel that a project has potential.”

In total, Jeannot Engaged was able to receive 30,000 euros from the CNC and 6,000 euros of the scam (before the tax) to help him carry out his project. Therefore, he could produce and even project his documentary in preview. Dynamic in June 2024.

Monetization, associations and personal funds

Jeannot’s preview did not bring anything. It was 100% free. But in other cases, film tickets also allow us to absorb part of the production budget. “The creators receive part of the box office. Create an additional income line in the creative economy that did not exist a year earlier,” confirms Romain Cabrolier, director of Associations on YouTube, with Tech & Co.

However, “they do not organize these projections to maximize their income,” he insists on Elisha Karmitz, managing director of MK2, with Tech & Co. “The heart of his economic model remains a brand content and advertising relations.” In fact, most of the financing of these projects comes directly from videos monetization and, above all, sponsors.

Integag could count on his nine associations, including Nike, Deezer or Orange, to finance his Everest Epic. The four episodes of Terminal Michou has been sponsored by Vinned or Agricole Credit.

“The scholarships have helped me finance a third of the project”, because their part Jeannot is attractive. “For the rest of the funds, you must obtain it elsewhere, for example, with associations.” YouTuber has made the decision not to add Dynamic. “Some subjects do not necessarily lend associations,” he said. The cameraman preferred to recover the income of the association of other videos.

He also invested part of his personal funds. A solution often adopted by content creators to fill the holes in these budgets … Not always in balance.

But the youtubeur found the parade: reinvest the money of its annexed companies, such as Ciao Kombucha. “It makes it possible to perpetuate these production projects that we attribute to important projects,” he concludes. The same observation on the other side of the Atlantic. Mrbeast, the most often the youtuber in the world recently confessed to earn more money with his chocolate business than with his videos.
