Crypto Scam: Thousands Fooled By Fake Apple Conference

A Youtube live stream hijacked an old interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook to spread a cryptocurrency scam. More than 70,000 people saw it.

A Youtube channel broadcast live on Youtube, a broadcast of an old CNN interview with Tim Cook that was used to lure users into a cryptocurrency scam, the specialized site discovered. the edge.

Verge journalist Jay Peters found this video that was in his recommendations on his Youtube home page as he recently watched several Apple-related videos.

It indicates that the broadcast showed many signs of infringement, beginning with an odd title: “Apple Event Live. Apple CEO Tim Cook: Apple & Metaverse in 2022.” The video was based on a previous interview with Tim Cook conducted by CNN in 2018. The channel behind the scam added the Bitcoin and Ethereum logos to the video, covered the CNN Money logo with the text “Apple Crypto Event 2022”, and added bold text that reads “URGENT NEWS” at the bottom.

The scam was on the channel page, which claimed to be “Apple LIVE”, which has nothing to do with Apple. The link to the channel was full of strange messages referring to a dubious cryptocurrency site.

More than 70,000 people simultaneously watched this fake broadcast. YouTube removed the stream after the article was published for violating YouTube’s terms of service.

The reporter also found a live broadcast on a separate channel claiming to be “Apple Inc.” The broadcast showed a replay of a bitcoin interview with Elon Musk and Jack Dorsey. The audience for the broadcast exceeded 10,000, and a link to a dubious-looking cryptocurrency site was posted in the chat. The video has also been removed.
