“We fear that SAP would have restricted the competition”: the commission is opening an investigation against the German software giant

The European Commission suspects that the largest software editor in Europe for a possible dominant position abuse.

SAP is in the visitor of the European Commission. This announces, this Thursday, September 25, having opened an investigation aimed at the German software giant, which suspects possible crimes to the competition.

In a press release, the European Executive specifies that their investigations are related to the possible abuse of the dominant position that SAP would commit in the maintenance and support services associated with its ERP software called. They help companies administer all kinds of current activities (finance, human resources, project management …).

Suspices of unfair competition

According to the Commission, several group practices would aim to expel competitors also present in this segment, such as the obligation imposed on the clients of the German group who wish to use this type of software to include maintenance services in contracts. SAP would also impose deterrent costs to customers who would start using their maintenance services, after asking other suppliers.

SAP, the largest software editor in Europe, points to a turnover of 37.5 billion euros and a gain of around 10 billion euros this year. The company announced on Wednesday an association with another heavyweight, Amazon Web Services (AWS), to implement its services in the European Cloud of AWS, an infrastructure that the US company intends to deploy in Germany since the end of the year for an investment of 7.8 billion euros. This “sovereign cloud” is supposed to offer organizations “more options to meet their sovereignty needs while using advanced cloud technologies.”
