“We are not here to punish artists”: Spotify will now point (hide) the music generated by AI

The transmission platform, until now not very reactive on the subject of the music generated thanks to artificial intelligences, announces the implementation of new measures.

Criticized for its management of the content generated by artificial intelligence, Spotify decides today to speak and announces a modification of its rules. In a conference that Tech & Co could help, the transmission platform explains that “it will promote positive initiatives” respecting “industry standards” in terms of AI.

This first implies the appearance of an indication that a content has used AI (partially or completely). But it is very hidden: you will have to go to the music credits to find out.

Spotify wants to enforce the “standards”

It is not planned, as you can do Deezer, exhibit it clearly under a title or album. “There are several ways to use artificial intelligence,” defends Sam Duboff, marketing manager, with Tech & Co. “All transmission services build their own systems to define what AI does, which does not do the AI.”

If these contents respect the “standards”, Spotify do not account for the draft or short monetization. According to the platform, these new rules should make it possible to increase income “to those who respect them.”

“The AI cloning them without authorization from other artists or that artists are illegitimately invited to Spotify,” adds Charlie Hellman, responsible for music.

To do this, Spotify has developed a filter that must block defective accounts to use tips to generate money in depth of legitimate artists. We are talking in particular about mass positions, the abuse of SEO rules to bring back titles or a duplicate to go beyond the protections proposed by Spotify or use content subject to copyright.

“This is the beginning of a long trip and we continue to learn from our discussions with artists, labels and users,” adds Charlie Hellman, surprisingly silent when it comes to explaining why Spotify took so long to respond to the problem of generative AI on the platform.
