Discord Hack: Hackers began carrying out their threats and publishing personal data from compromised accounts

Faced with Discord, which appears to have minimized the number of users affected by the hack, the hackers responded by posting a large amount of data, including selfies of people with their IDs, email addresses and other personal information.

Given Discord’s statements, the hackers ended up carrying out their threat. On October 3, the gamer-favorite social platform revealed that it had been the victim of a hack after one of its third-party providers was compromised. While hackers claim to have stolen the data of 5.5 million accounts and 2.1 million ID documents, Discord gave a much lower figure on October 8, while denouncing an “extortion attempt.”

According to her, “only” about 70,000 users are affected and have had their identity documents potentially compromised. A minimization that did not please the hackers, who continue to claim to have stolen around 1.5 TB of data. “This is going to get really bad,” they wrote on a Telegram channel, 404 Media reports. They then began posting Discord user data, the authenticity of which was confirmed by a source with knowledge of the hack.

Email address, selfie, phone number…

The hackers did not mince words when publishing this data. They include selfies of people holding their identification documents, at least two of which come from people with American and Canadian documents. While some of these images are just screenshots of larger folders containing thumbnails, others clearly show the person’s face.

The hackers went further by also publishing a table showing the email addresses of 1,000 people, accompanied by their username and a “TRUE” or “FALSE” indicating whether they have been verified or not. Each person’s city, state or county, and country were also provided, as well as part of their phone number (area code and last digits of the number). The table also reveals whether users had two-factor authentication enabled and when they were last seen on Discord.

Worse still, hackers leaked data related to a specific user who has a Coinbase email address. This information includes your IP address and payment information for the platform’s Nitro subscription service and your full phone number. Number that was confirmed by 404 Media. Contacted by the media, Coinbase assured that it had not been affected, after having carried out an investigation.

Finally, hackers posted a screenshot showing a user with the same name as Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer, Tyler Robinson, interacting with Discord customer service. If the person accused of the influencer’s murder had already used the platform, he confirmed that the account he communicated with customer service was not his.

Don’t give in to blackmail

Discord, for its part, maintains that only around 70,000 users have had their identification photos exposed. The platform also has no intention of giving in to blackmail from pirates. “We will not reward those responsible for these illegal actions,” they stated in their October 8 press release.

Zendesk, which the hackers say is the third-party vendor they targeted, also spoke out. “Our investigation indicates that this incident was not the result of a vulnerability within the Zendesk platform. Zendesk’s own systems were not compromised,” a spokesperson said. Specialized in software development, this company offers a customer service platform to many companies.
