With iOS 16, iPhones will now detect fake AirPods

During its keynote, which took place on September 7 in Cuppertino, California, Apple presented the features of iOS 16, its new operating system.

Apple wants to solve an endemic problem in the market for second-hand devices: the sale of counterfeit AirPods. According to the specialized site 9to5Mac, iOS 16, the new iPhone operating system, will display an alert message on the screen at the time of connection to detect if it is a fake AirPods or AirPods Pro. Apple didn’t directly mention the feature during its September 7 conference, but it was spotted in the system’s source code.

If the smartphone detects fake AirPods, the connection will not be prevented. Users will then have the option to leave the connection, continue it, or learn about the different ways to differentiate the copies from their originals.

iOS 16 released on September 12

Counterfeit models look exactly like the originals. Except of course when it comes to sound quality. From the packaging to the material to the pairing process, it is sometimes difficult for potential buyers to tell whether the earphones are genuine or not.

Apple introduced its AirPods Pro 2 lineup during its keynote with some notable new features: The H2 chip enhances active noise reduction, while the touch control appears on the sides of the headphones to reduce or increase the sound volume. The “transparency” mode has been updated, which allows you to still hear what is happening next to you while wearing the headphones. 299 euros will be needed to pay for them.

iOS 16 will include other features such as lock screen customization or the ability to delete messages in iMessage. It will be implemented for free on all models up to and including the iPhone 8 Plus on September 12.
