Activision-Blizzard acquisition: Microsoft ready for concessions with the European Union

Microsoft wants to propose solutions to the European Union to prevent its takeover bid by Activision-Blizzard from being rejected.

Microsoft continues to fight for approval of the Activision-Blizzard acquisition of the European Union (EU). For this reason, the American electronics giant should propose, in the coming weeks, corrective measures to the European competition authorities. Object of the operation for the Mountain View company: provide guarantees in order to avoid objections to its offer to purchase Activision-Blizzard for 69,000 million dollars, reports Reuters, this Monday, November 28.

Microsoft had announced the acquisition of the publisher of obligations in January 2022 with the aim of competing with the leaders Tencent and Sony. But since then, the US electronics giant has faced regulatory hurdles in the European Union, Britain and the United States, with Sony criticizing the deal and even calling for a regulatory veto.

The European Commission, which is investigating the deal, has until January 2023 to draw up an official list of competition concerns. For Microsoft, proposing corrective measures before the publication of such a document could have the beneficial consequence of shortening the regulatory process.

The solution proposed by Microsoft would consist mainly of a ten-year license agreement with Sony, which owns the Playstation. The European competition watchdog, which is due to rule on the deal on April 11, declined to comment at this time. For its part, Microsoft said it was working with the Commission to address legitimate market concerns.
