This isn’t necessarily a surprise, given the departure of thousands of employees, some of whom were in charge of moderation. But Twitter has decided to make things clear on its website.
“As of November 23, 2022, Twitter no longer applies the Covid-19 misleading information policy,” underlines a short text in the “Covid-19 Misleading Information Policy” section. french version it had not yet been modified on Tuesday.
With this announcement, Elon Musk’s social network no longer intends to leak false information on the subject of Covid-19, as promised. Until now, his rules prohibited “using Twitter services to share false or misleading information about Covid-19 that could cause harm.”
In particular, several accounts of questioned personalities had been suspended, starting with that of Silvano Trotta, who had almost 70,000 subscribers.
In early March 2021, Twitter announced that it was stepping up its fight against vaccine misinformation, including the ability to ban users after five warnings. A few months earlier, the social network had decided to remove false posts about Covid-19 vaccines, following in the footsteps of Facebook and YouTube.
But this era is over since the takeover of Elon Musk, who wants to prioritize free speech. The billionaire notably announced an end to account suspensions, except in certain cases, raising concern among many observers.
