BeReal has been an unexpected hit on social media this year, forcing giants like TikTok and Instagram to emulate its format. On November 29, the social network won App of the Year at the Apple App Store Awards.
The app founded by Frenchmen Alexis Barreyat and Kévin Perreau has experienced a meteoric rise. Launched in 2020, the social network offers its users to receive an alert at random times of the day to post a photo combining the front and rear cameras in two minutes. BeReal has thus put pressure on applications such as TikTok and Instagram because BeReal reconnects with the authenticity of the beginnings of these applications, without filters or artifice.
In a statement, Apple described BeReal as an app to provide “an authentic insight into the lives of family and friends.” Thus, the social network is the eighth most downloaded free application on the App Store and exceeded 50 million downloads at the beginning of October.
“New insights”
For the past two years, app of the year awards have gone to Toca Life World, a kids’ app, and WakeOut!, a fitness app. Among the winners of the rest of the categories this year, we can also find Apex Legends Mobile, from Electronic Arts as iPhone game of the year, GoodNotes 5 as best application of the year for iPad or Gentler Streak as best application for Apple Watch.
“This year’s App Store Awards winners have reinvented our experiences through apps that offer fresh, thoughtful and authentic perspectives,” said CEO Tim Cook. “From independent self-made creators to international teams, these entrepreneurs are making a significant impact and represent how apps and games influence our communities and our lives.”
