Orion, the Earth and the Moon. NASA capsule reaches more than 423 km distance and breaks Apollo record

This Monday, Orion, NASA’s space capsule, reached more than 423,000 kilometers, thus reaching its maximum distance from Earth during the Artemis I mission, and also surpassing the Apollo 13 record. spacecraft designed to carry humans into space. so far.

In an image captured by NASA, Orion manages to have a “unique view” of the Earth and the Moon, “through a camera mounted on one of the solar panels.” “The spacecraft also captured images of the Earth and the Moon together, on a day when the Moon appeared to eclipse Earth,” explains NASA in a statement🇧🇷

The Apollo 13 record was broken by Orion on Saturday, November 26, when the capsule reached about 400,000 kilometers from Earth.

The first phase of the Artemis I mission lasts 25 days and, for now, Orion “remains in good health as it continues its journey in a distant retrograde orbit”, that is, “thousands of kilometers beyond the Moon “.

“Artemis I was an extraordinary success and completed a historic series of events,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “It’s amazing how well this mission has gone,” he underlines.

Orion will return to Earth on December 11.

NASA’s mission, Artemis, marks the start of the program with which the United States intends to return to the surface of the Moon in 2025, placing the first female astronaut and the first black astronaut on lunar soil.

On top of the rocket is the Orion capsule which, for this first mission, is equipped with a “dummy” that will record the impacts of the flight on the human body.

The mission’s launch followed two launch attempts in August and September that were canceled due to technical issues.
