What if France managed to design a device without Asian know-how and production? This is the will of Crosscall, a company based in Aix-en-Provence and specialized in extreme mobile telephony.
Founded in 2009, the company has built a reputation for rugged, durable smartphones, especially tough in all conditions, ever since the Shark, a fully waterproof floating phone. Now it equips the police and the national gendarmerie, and soon the fire brigade. Crosscall now wants to go further, not in design, but in philosophy, by developing a Franco-European 5G smartphone.
A question of European sovereignty
Paving “a decisive path towards European digital and industrial sovereignty”: this is Crosscall’s stated goal with the announcement of a European-produced phone next year. To achieve this, the southern company has surrounded itself with an ecosystem of French and European partners and has relocated part of its industry to better control the entire production chain. Therefore, design, testing, production or even assembly should take place on the mainland.
Designing and producing locally to limit environmental impact is entirely in the brand’s DNA, offering products with the longest possible lifespan for less frequent replacement. Crosscall recently introduced the Core Z5, its first 5G smartphone with a five-year warranty.
“A new age”
Crosscall has not announced any technological or industrial partners, which however intends to “better control quality and reduce transportation with its eco-responsible project. It promises that this smartphone will be efficient and meet the needs of consumers, without compromise, but for va However, it should always be based on components from Asia, even if a project to create a European processor is being considered.
Faced with Apple, Samsung, Xiaomi and other Asian giants, Crosscall wants to set up “a new leader in mobile telephony in Europe” to “allow the Old Continent to be competitive again”.
The smartphone will be manufactured in France from 2024 to mark the entry into “a new era”, that of digital sovereignty, insists the brand. But it is above all the price of a product made in Europe that will be closely examined and on which you will also have to be a bit competitive to seduce and convey your message.
