Since the clashes that affected the factory in Zhengzhou, China, since November 23, Foxconn is now in labor difficulties as 20,000 employees have already left the company. To make up for this shortfall, Foxconn offers a reward of 1,000 yuan or 135 euros to employees who refer a family member to work at the factory.
They will then receive 500 yuan if the person they refer stays with the company for 15 days. Then an additional 500 yuan if the new employee stays for a month, according to a message seen by the BBC on the Chinese messaging app WeChat.
On November 24, after several days of riots at the factory, Foxconn was forced to offer $1,400 to its employees to stop their protests and leave the company. Numerous videos that have gone viral on social media show hundreds of workers erecting barricades and confronting factory security personnel. Of the 20,000 employees who left the company, most had not yet begun work on the site.
Shortage for the holidays?
The protesters denounce the company’s Covid-19 policy, which mixed virus-positive workers with newcomers. In addition, the bonuses promised by the company would not have been paid. Foxconn later apologized for a “technical error” in its payment system.
As the holiday season approaches, Apple has warned that shipments of its new iPhone 14 will be delayed. The shortage of the iPhone 14 Pro would have increased from 3 to more than 10% in a few weeks according to Dan Ives of the investment company Wedbush Securities, interviewed by the BBC. One source even told Reuters that production could fall by 30%.
