A simple movement of your smartphone in front of the tablet and, after a few minutes, it lights up green. Ugh, no spyware detected. This device, simply called “Detect spyware”, is available in various Yvelines gendarmerie brigades, as part of a first experiment.
A simple and practical way to fight against a new scourge: these small applications, easy to find on the Internet and used to spy on your spouse.
This illegal activity worries the gendarmes, especially in the context of domestic violence. “We have more and more people who are suspicious,” Arnaud Conchaudron, a security representative for the Yvelines Departmental Gendarmerie Group, told Tech&Co.
provide evidence
The famous tablet was developed by the La Poste group, which prides itself on its strong expertise in cybersecurity. Without connecting to the smartphone or installing any program, it is capable of detecting abnormal behavior. “We only analyze the data that comes out of the phone on Wi-Fi,” Cyrille Tesser, project manager at La Poste, explains to Tech&Co.
These are all signs that indicate the presence of malicious software.
And that will then allow legal proceedings to be initiated. “Analyzing a victim’s phone means providing criminal evidence that will confuse the perpetrators and confirm their status as a victim,” said Vincent Roche, head of the Yvelines gendarmes.
Other fields of application
Actually, the tablet especially to raise doubts to reassure a worried person. “Since last June, we have made just over 200 detections. Fortunately, we had a fairly low compromise rate,” emphasizes Arnaud Conchaudron.
The experiment will soon be extended to companies and certain Yvelines post offices. With other fields of possibilities in the offing, starting with college and high school students who can easily watch their smartphone get hacked through simple downloads on messaging systems.
