The company Meta, parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has dismantled the team in charge of studying the harmful effects of these social networks on their users, indicates the Wall Street Journal Thursday September 8. Called the “responsible innovation” group, this team was made up of about twenty engineers and ethicists.
Meta has indicated to the Wall Street Journal that “most” of these employees will be directed to other departments to carry out similar assignments. The goals of this team will also be pursued.
The “responsible innovation” team aimed to quickly identify problems with the company’s products to inform the teams tasked with resolving them. She also had to anticipate them. Two years ago, Margaret Sewart, in charge of the team in question, described her as a “general practitioner”, who makes the diagnosis and directs a specialist.
Focus on the metaverse
The company said it wanted to focus more of its resources on developing its metaverse, the universe that mixes virtual and real, at the heart of its long-term project. Ending this group is part of this logic. A questionable decision, since the metaverse begins to generate fears for the safety of its users, especially from the point of view of moderation.
