Power outages: How telecom players want to save 112 this winter

The French telecommunications federation has been warning for several weeks about the impossibility of accessing emergency numbers in the event of a load cut. They presented their proposals to the government.

Maintain the operation of the European emergency number, 112, even during power cuts. Here is the complex that the French federation of telecommunications (FFT) is working on. The organization, which brings together the 4 operators in France, has been warning for several weeks about the risk of cutting off emergency numbers in the event of a load cut this winter.

The reason is simple: repeater antennas, which allow the use of mobile networks and which are each associated with an operator, are not considered priority locations in the event of power outages decided by RTE. Therefore, during a two-hour period, emergency calls will inevitably not be available.

To avoid this situation, the FFT proposes to the government to optimize the meshing of the repeater antennas in an attempt to avoid breaking the total network on 112. Unlike the police or fire brigade numbers, the European emergency number is shared by operators. Clearly, you can use an Orange repeater antenna with a Bouygues Télécom subscription to call 112 (not 15 or 18).

With a suitable mesh, therefore, it would be possible to guarantee that at least one antenna is always available to cover the territory. Therefore, the FFT transmitted its information on the repeater antennas to be protected so that Enedis could define the correct load shedding mesh.

Even so, for the moment, none of the players is committed to a promise that is difficult to fulfill at the moment, such as the maintenance of 112 in the event of a load cut.
